Why convert JPG to PNG?

JPG is lossy — every time it is saved, a little more detail is discarded in exchange for a much smaller file. PNG is lossless: it stores the exact pixels with no compression artifacts, and it supports transparency. That makes PNG the right target when you are about to edit an image further, when a tool or upload form specifically asks for PNG, or when you want text and sharp edges in the image to stay crisp instead of picking up JPG's characteristic blocky fringing.

JPG to PNG converter showing a photo of a dog in autumn leaves: 966.5 KB as JPG and 7.96 MB as PNG.
The same photo went from 966.5 KB to 7.96 MB. PNG can't restore detail the JPG already discarded; it stores what is left losslessly, so convert when you need PNG for editing, not for better quality.

The trade-off is size. A photo that weighs 200 KB as JPG can easily land between 1 MB and 3 MB as PNG, because lossless compression cannot match JPG's photographic efficiency. For images headed straight to a website, that is usually the wrong direction — the PNG to JPG converter or image compressor go the other way and shrink files. For screenshots, diagrams, logos, and editing workflows, PNG is the better long-term format.

Lossless means the pixels stop degrading

Converting JPG to PNG cannot bring back detail the JPG encoder already threw away — that information is gone. What it does is stop the clock. From the moment you convert, every save, crop, and annotation is stored exactly, with no new artifacts. If you plan to open an image in an editor several times, converting to PNG first avoids stacking JPEG generation loss on top of loss. For archival copies of a JPG that you will not edit, keeping the original JPG is still the smaller choice.

Converting several JPGs at once

Select more than one file and the tool switches to a batch queue: each image is converted in order, results are listed with individual download buttons, and all of them can be saved together as a single ZIP. Pasting from the clipboard works too. Because the conversion happens on your device, a folder of images processes at local disk speed with no upload queue — and nothing is sent anywhere, so client photos and private images stay private.

JPG to PNG vs other conversions

If you need a smaller file rather than a lossless one, WebP is usually the best modern choice: JPG to WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, and it supports transparency. If your images came from an iPhone as HEIC, the HEIC to JPG converter is the usual first stop, since HEIC needs decoding before any browser can display it. And if you know the exact format pair you want, the image format converter does every direction in one place.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to PNG without uploading it?

Drop your JPG onto the box above and the PNG is created instantly on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is no upload wait, no file-size transfer, and the image never leaves your computer — the conversion runs entirely in your browser with the canvas API.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

It cannot restore detail that the JPG already discarded, but it does stop any further loss. PNG is lossless, so this converter writes every decoded pixel exactly as-is. From here on you can edit and re-save the PNG as many times as you like without adding another generation of compression artifacts.

Why is the PNG file bigger than the JPG?

JPG is built for photographs and throws away fine detail to shrink files dramatically; PNG keeps every pixel exactly and compresses without loss. A photographic JPG almost always becomes a much larger PNG — often 3–10×. If your goal is a smaller file rather than an editable one, keep the JPG or convert to WebP instead.

Can I convert several JPGs to PNG at once?

Yes. Select multiple files (or paste them from your clipboard) and the tool converts each one in turn, lists the results with individual download buttons, and packages everything into a single ZIP. Everything still runs locally, so a large batch never touches a server.

Does transparency work when converting JPG to PNG?

JPG has no alpha channel, so the source has no transparency to carry over. If you need a transparent background, remove it first with the background remover and export a PNG from there.

Is there a file size or count limit?

There is no server-side limit because nothing is uploaded — the only ceiling is your device memory. Files up to 25 MB are accepted, which covers ordinary photos and most downloaded images.
