Why convert JPG to WebP?

WebP is the format that made modern image-heavy websites fast. At the same visual quality it compresses photographs roughly 25–35% smaller than JPG, and it also supports transparency and animation — JPG supports neither. For a site, that saving compounds: a page with ten photos can shed hundreds of kilobytes without touching the markup, which improves loading speed and Core Web Vitals.

A 653.4 KB JPG became a 510.1 KB WebP, 22% smaller, with no visible difference between the two.

Same look, smaller file

This converter re-encodes the photo with the browser's own WebP encoder, keeping the pixel dimensions identical — a 3000×2000 JPG becomes a 3000×2000 WebP. The default quality of 90% is tuned to be visually indistinguishable from the source for photos. Screenshots and graphics with fine text compress differently: for those, a lossless PNG or a high-quality WebP is the safer choice, and the image compressor can hit an exact file size when a limit applies.

When to keep the JPG instead

WebP is supported by every current browser, but not by every piece of software. Older image editors, office suites, print services, and some upload forms still expect .jpg. If you are not sure what will open the file, keep the JPG; if it is bound for a website, WebP is the better default. The WebP to JPG converter handles the trip back the other way.

Nothing is uploaded

Decoding and re-encoding happen entirely in your browser, so the file is never transmitted, stored, or logged, and there is no server-side size limit. That also means conversion works offline once the page has loaded. Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a JPG to WebP without uploading it?

Drop the .jpg or .jpeg file onto the box above and the WebP is created instantly on your device. The image is decoded and re-encoded by your browser, so nothing is sent to a server, there is no queue, and private photos stay private.

Does converting JPG to WebP reduce quality?

At the default 90% quality the result looks the same as the original while often being 25–35% smaller. WebP is a newer codec, so it stores the same visual detail in fewer bytes than JPG. If you push the quality slider lower you trade some sharpness for an even smaller file — useful for thumbnails, not for print.

Will WebP images work everywhere?

Every current browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and mobile browsers — displays WebP, so it is safe for websites and web apps. Some older desktop software, office documents, and upload forms still reject .webp, so keep a JPG copy if you need to send the image to a person or system that might not support it.

Why is WebP smaller than JPG?

WebP uses more modern compression: it predicts image content more efficiently, encodes edges and gradients with fewer bits, and supports both lossy and lossless modes. For photographs that means roughly 25–35% smaller files at the same perceived quality, which adds up quickly on image-heavy pages.

Does converting change the image dimensions?

No. A 2400×1600 JPG becomes a 2400×1600 WebP — only the file size and format change. If you also need a smaller pixel size, use the image cropper and resizer first, or compress and resize together with the image compressor.

Can I convert several JPG files at once?

Select one JPG for the full before/after preview, or select several at once (or paste them) to convert the whole batch and download the WebPs as one ZIP. Each conversion runs locally in about a second, with no upload bandwidth used.
